The History of Basil Essential Oil

Throughout the centuries, Basil Essential Oils have been used by cultures the world over. The word Basil is from the Greek 'Basileus' meaning King and Basil is still referred to as the king of herbs by cookery writers today.

As well as Magicians believing it to have unsavoury powers, Basil was also believed to be sacred in Indian folklore and some Indian tribes chew it to gain inspiration before taking part in religious ceremonies. Basil is also a very popular medicinal and culinary herb in western cultures and during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, dried Basil was commonly used as a snuff for colds and headaches.

In Jewish folklore, it was widely believed that Basil would provide strength during fasting, whilst in present day Italy it is a symbol of love. The Chinese used Basil for many centuries, resulting in it gaining a reputation as a cure for epilepsy. In Europe, in order to ensure a safe journey after death, it is placed in the hands of the dead and in India, to ensure they reach God, Basil is placed in the mouth of the dying.

When supplies became hard to come by during the Second World War, the popularity of Basil soared.
